Milan junior right-hander Cady Pauley fired a two-hit shutout at the Princeton Lady Tigers on Monday night, scattering a hit batter and four walks, as the Lady Wildcats remained hot with a 2-0 win at Gerald Gentry Field, broadcast on KTTN FM 92.3.
As anticipated, the duel between the Grand River Conference rivals turned into a duel between Pauley and Princeton junior Lauren Krohn, with both pitchers giving up minimal hits, but battling command difficulties off-and-on through the game. Milan’s first three batters in the top of the 3rd inning reached via base on balls. After Janissa Martinez was forced at home on a grounder to Princeton third baseman Faith Siemer, Gracie Dickson lofted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Avery Pickering.Â
The game remained 1-0 Milan through six innings. With two out in the top of the 7th, Pauley, who had hit a loud, long foul ball to left in her prior at-bat, hit a long and high fly ball to left field, just out of the reach of Grace Kelly for a solo home run, doubling Milan’s lead to 2-0.
Princeton went down in order to end the game, dropping the Lady Tigers record to 3-5 overall and, from the Tiger perspective, a frustrating 0-4 in the GRC. Milan, with the win, improves to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in conference play. On Tuesday night, Milan is at Trenton on KTTN FM 92.3, with Princeton hosting second-place Polo.
Krohn had dominant stuff from the circle for Princeton, but took the tough-luck loss, despite striking out 14 batters, giving up five walks and four hits, from Danielle Henry, Janissa Martinez, Gracie Dickson, and Pauley (with the 7th inning long ball).
Princeton’s varsity had a second game on Monday night, and behind the pitching of Megan Spencer, shutout Gilman City 8-0 for the Lady Tigers fourth win of the season.
The Trenton Lady Bulldogs hosted Lawson on Monday night, with the visitors from the KCI Conference breaking a 1-1 tie with three runs in the top of the sixth inning, holding on for a 4-2 win at Mark Griffin Memorial Field. Â
Trenton got strong pitching from Emma Roberts, who went five innings, and Jenna Reeter, who went the remaining two, allowing eight hits. Three of the runs were of the earned variety, as THS committed two errors to Lawson’s one. Trenton’s offense had only five hits, scoring single tallies in the third and sixth innings. Both Gracyn Rongey and Maci Moore had a pair of hits for Trenton, with Chandler Lynch and Rongey scoring the team’s runs.
The loss drops Trenton to 1-7 overall, heading into home conference tests this week with Milan (Tuesday) and Princeton (Thursday).
