Tyler Wells twirled six innings of one-run baseball to earn the victory as the Baltimore Orioles shut down the slumbering bats of the Kansas City Royals, winning 6-1 on Monday afternoon at Camden Yards.

Baltimore is running hot, winners of four of their last five games, pushing their final record in a 10-game homestand to 6-1.  Wells allowed only a two-out RBI single in the first inning to Ryan O’Hearn, but retired 16 of the final 19 batters he faced, improving to 1-2.

The good start for Kansas City right-hander Carlos Hernandez (0-2) hit the skids in the home 5th, with a walk, a double by Anthony Bemboom, an RBI single from Jorge Mateo, and a throwing error by M.J. Melendez giving the Orioles the lead.  Four more runs crossed the plate on a two-run single by Ryan Mountcastle, an RBI single by Trey Mancini, and a wild pitch to score Mancini.

Kansas City has dropped seven of nine, scoring just 22 runs in that span.  The Royals will continue their three-city road trip in Arlington, Texas against the Rangers on Tuesday night, with Baltimore traveling to St. Louis to meet up with the Cardinals in interleague play.

Before Monday’s game, a make-up from Saturday afternoon’s rainout at Camden Yards, the Royals placed outfielder Edward Olivares on the 10-day injured list with a right quad strain, originally sustained in Game 1 of Sunday’s doubleheader.  Kansas City recalled catcher Sebastian Rivero to add depth to that position moving forward for the team.
