The National Hockey League’s Board of Governors made a significant decision today, approving the establishment of a new NHL franchise in Utah, set to begin play in the 2024-25 season. This franchise will be owned and controlled by Smith Entertainment Group, led by Ryan and Ashley Smith. As part of this arrangement, the Arizona Coyotes franchise will become inactive, with a provision allowing for reactivation if owner Alex Meruelo constructs a new, state-of-the-art facility appropriate for NHL hockey within the next five years.
The approved transactions entail the transfer of all existing hockey assets of the Coyotes franchise to the new Utah team, including their roster of players, draft picks, and hockey operations department. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman expressed excitement about this development, highlighting the vibrant nature of Utah and the potential for growth in the sport of hockey within the state. He also commended the Smiths for their collaboration with the league to address the situation in a beneficial manner.
The Smiths, in turn, expressed their honor and commitment to bringing NHL hockey to Utah, emphasizing their intention to build a competitive team and create a lasting impact on the community. They acknowledged the unprecedented nature of the situation and their bold decision to introduce a new franchise under these circumstances, with a focus on building a legacy for future generations.
Alex Meruelo, Chairman & Governor of the Arizona Coyotes, affirmed his agreement with the decision, recognizing the need to transition to a more suitable arena for NHL hockey. However, he assured the community that this is not the end for NHL hockey in Arizona, as he retains the right to reactivate the team within the next five years. He remains committed to the community and the future development of a first-class sports arena and entertainment district without public financial support.
