The Newtown-Harris/Grundy R-V Tigers bested the Trenton Bulldogs in baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Burleigh Grimes Field, scoring a 7th inning run to claim a 10-9 victory. The game was topsy-turvy throughout, with the Tigers racing out to a 6-3 lead after two innings, with Trenton scoring six runs from the 4th through the 6th innings to rally to even the contest.
Mason Rayl pitched a scoreless seventh inning for Newtown-Harris, striking out two batters and helping to set the stage for the game-winner. Aidan Rains and Corbin Axtell joined Rains in scoring two runs each for Newtown-Harris, with the Tigers held to only four hits. However, Trenton’s pitchers allowed nine walks, with the Bulldog defense committing four errors.
Trenton’s offense amassed eight hits in the loss, with Sam Gibson and Aidan Weyer each collecting two hits. Gabe Novak scored twice, with Weyer scoring three times for THS. Elijah Miller went the first two innings for Trenton, with Sam Gibson pitching the final 4 2/3 innings. Both pitching staffs racked up 12 strikeouts in the game.
The Brookfield Bulldogs, as part of Saturday’s round-robin tournament hosted by Trenton, took a 6-1 win over THS, with Colton and Peyton combining on a two-hitter, with eight strikeouts. Trenton did receive the benefit of eight free passes, with had only two hits, with Novak racking up a hit and a run scored. Weyer had a hit as well. Mason Rongey went the first six innings for Trenton, allowing five hits and striking out five. Of Brookfield’s six runs scored, all were unearned, as the Trenton defense committed eight errors.
