The NWSL’s Kansas City Current have made significant progress in building their new stadium, which will be the first in the United States specifically designed for women’s professional sports. With a budget of $117 million, the stadium is expected to be ready for the Current’s first home match in the upcoming season.

The construction of the stadium is not only a significant milestone for the Current but also for women’s professional sports as a whole. It represents a major investment and commitment to providing top-notch facilities for women athletes. The stadium is projected to have a positive economic impact on Kansas City, with an estimated $48.8 million annual boost by 2025. Additionally, it is expected to contribute to a long-term economic boost of $1.24 billion, particularly in anticipation of hosting World Cup events in 2026.

The involvement of Kansas City Current owner Chris Long, founder of Palmer Square Capital Management, highlights the financial support behind the project. The ownership group also includes NFL quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who acquired a stake in the Current in January. Mahomes and his wife Brittany, a former college soccer player, are passionate about soccer and have joined the effort to promote women’s professional sports.

Currently, the Kansas City Current shares Children’s Mercy Park with the MLS club Sporting Kansas City. However, the new downtown stadium, located at Berkley Riverfront Park, will provide the team with its dedicated home. The stadium has a seating capacity of 11,500, creating an intimate and vibrant atmosphere for matches.

In addition to the new stadium, the Current opened their own privately funded $18 million training facility last year. This investment in training infrastructure demonstrates the commitment to developing the team and providing players with top-notch resources to enhance their performance.
