The North Central Missouri College Pirates received a strong pitching performance by Gordon Arthaud, and clutch hitting from Landon Figg, in sweeping a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader at Burleigh Grimes Field.
The Pirates beat the Missouri Valley junior varsity 8-1 in the first game, as Arthaud allowed only one run in five innings of work, while striking out eight, walking three, and surrendering four hits.
NCMC jumped on the Vikings early, putting up five runs in the bottom of the first inning, with Rubiangelo Mingeli hitting an RBI groundout, Smith Kemper an RBI single, a bases-loaded walk by Zach Lehmann, and an RBI single by Brendley Martina. Lehmann drove in four runs for the Pirates in the win.
In the nightcap, Landon Figg had three RBI’s, as the Pirates slipped by the Vikings, 5-4. Cedeon Langguth allowed just two hits to the Vikings, with zero earned runs, no walks, and five strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings of superb pitching work. Missouri Valley took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but another five run Pirate outburst, this one in the bottom of the second inning, gave the home team a lead that they never surrendered. Figg had a three-run double with Derek Hussey adding a two-run single in the inning for NCMC.
The Pirates and Vikings will play another double-dip, this time on Thursday, in a 2 o’clock doubleheader on the Missouri Valley campus in Marshall.
