The Chillicothe Mudcats had an unusual game on Wednesday night in which there were no official umpires. Instead, two parents from Chillicothe and one person from Des Moines filled in as umpires. The game was also shortened to seven innings due to the umpire issue. Despite the unconventional circumstances, the Mudcats managed to come out on top with a 3-2 victory.
Des Moines’ starting pitcher, Devin Doyle, had a strong outing, striking out the first three Mudcats’ batters he faced. However, the Mudcats’ offense got to him in the third inning when Second Baseman Chris Carratala scored on a double steal to take a 1-0 lead. Des Moines responded in the fourth inning with a two-RBI single by Weston Barber, putting them ahead 2-1.
In the sixth inning, Chillicothe needed a rally to get back in the game. After Doyle was replaced, Catcher Luca Boscarino hit an RBI double to tie the game 2-2. The Mudcats’ pitching also held strong, with RHP Jaydon Cabezudo delivering a solid performance over five innings.
The game went into extra innings, and in the eighth, First Baseman Tanner Sears hit a single and advanced to second on a balk. Boscarino then hit a line drive to center field, scoring Sears and giving the Mudcats a 3-2 lead. RHP Koby Linder came back in for the eighth inning and managed to close out the game, striking out Barber to secure the win for Chillicothe.
With this victory, the Mudcats have now won four games in a row, improving their record to 13-14. The team’s success relies on both their offense and pitching performing well. Their next game is against division rival St. Joseph at home in Chillicothe, scheduled for Thursday night. The Mudcats aim to extend their winning streak to five games before their off day on Friday.
