The University of Missouri System Board of Curators, at Tuesday morning’s meeting on the Columbia campus, approved a statue to honor long-time men’s basketball coach Norm Stewart.  The statue will be unveiled on Friday, November 10th, before the Tigers season opener against the Iowa State Cyclones at Mizzou Arena.  A statue dedication will take place at 1:30 at the Walsworth Plaza.

Stewart, a native of Shelbyville, Missouri, is a life-long Missouri Tiger, who played basketball and football for MU in the 1950’s, and later led the Tigers to 634 wins during a 32-year coaching run from 1967 to 1999.  His career at Missouri included eight regular-season Big 8 Conference championships and six Big 8 Tournament championships, in addition to 16 appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

Construction of the statue, according to MU Athletics spokesman Nick Joos, is expected to cost approximately $190,000.
