The Milan Lady Wildcats turned a 7th inning double play on a shoestring catch and throw to first base, a critical swing of momentum that helped the newest team in the Grand River Conference earn their first road win as a member of the GRC, 6-4 on Tuesday night at Gentry Field in Princeton.
The win pushes Milan to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the GRC East, a strong rebound for a team that lost its season opener at Putnam County, 11-1 on August 23rd.
In a game broadcast on KTTN FM 92.3, Erin Sayre pitched for the Lady ‘Cats, earning the victory. Â Milan was short one starter for Coach Nate Dodson’s regular rotation, moving Sayre to the rubber, and putting senior Kenna Michael to the field. Â Michael had a 2 for 2 night with the bat, while Courtney McCollum was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI’s. Â Sayre, in addition to her pitching work, was 2 for 4 at the plate.
Milan appears to have an opportunity to continue building momentum in conference play, hosting Maysville on Thursday night and South Harrison on Tuesday, September 6th. Â Princeton, unable to take momentum from Monday night’s 4-3 win at Mercer back into conference play, falls to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the GRC East. Â The Lady Tigers will play at Gallatin on Thursday night, and host Putnam County on Monday night. Â Both games are slated for 5:30 first pitches.
