The Milan Lady Wildcats built an early-lead for senior ace right-hander Cady Pauley, and held off a series of Trenton surges over the late innings to claim an 8-4 Grand River Conference softball victory on Tuesday night, in action heard on KTTN FM 92.3.
The Lady ‘Cats opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Gracie Dickson that scored Pauley, adding two more 2nd inning runs on a base hit by Avery Sayre that scored Auburn Cole, and a fielding error, one of six on the night by a leaky Trenton defense, that allowed Sayre to score.
Trenton cut into the lead in the top of the 5th inning, with Jena Harris reaching by walk, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt, stealing third base, and scoring on a base hit by Gracyn Rongey.
The Lady Bulldogs comeback hopes fizzled in the Milan 5th, with the Lady Wildcats batting eight and scoring four runs, pushing the lead out to a comfortable 7-1. Auburn Cole had a two-run double that scored Amy Pickering and Emerson Pauley.
Trenton rallied with three in the top of the sixth, but back-to-back strikeouts from Pauley with the potential tying-run on deck thwarted any further damage. The Lady Bulldogs went down in order in the 7th.
Milan, with the win, improves to 9-3 overall and 3-3 in the GRC’s Eastern Division, while the loss will likely keep THS out of the GRC’s “Crossover Thursday” event on Thursday, September 30th, with the Lady Bulldogs 1-6 conference record leaving Trenton in the 8th seed. There are only seven softball teams this fall in the GRC’s Western Division. Trenton’s overall record is 5-12.
