The Milan Lady Wildcats started postseason play with a victory on Tuesday night, ending an 8-year hex in the process, downing rival Putnam County 5-3 in Class 2, District 6 quarterfinal action from Walt Disney Park in Marceline.
Junior Cady Pauley got the victory for Milan with five strikeouts in the complete game effort. Gracie Dickson led the offense’s charge with a triple and a pair of RBI’s, while Avery Pickering added a double, with Janissa Martinez driving in a run. Carsen Sporleder was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored for Putnam County, while Grace Schnelle contributed a pair of RBI’s.
The win advances Milan into the district semifinals, to play #1 seed Marceline on Thursday night at 5 o’clock.
In Wednesday night’s quarterfinal round action from Marceline, Brookfield’s squad avoided the upset bug, scoring two runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to rally for a 5-4 win over #7 seed Gallatin. The win sends Brookfield into the district semifinals at 7 o’clock on Thursday night to play Trenton.
Trenton had the biggest upset of the opening round, with a five-run top of the 4th inning turning a 6-2 South Harrison into a 7-6 Trenton lead. An insurance run followed in the 7th inning, while Jenna Reeter had the finest outing of her Bulldog career, throwing 4 2/3 innings of shutout softball, in an 8-6 win from Marceline, broadcast on KTTN FM 92.3 on Wednesday night.
Trenton opened the scoring with back-to-back homers in the top of the 1st inning, with Maci Moore long ball followed up by a high fly ball from Chandler Lynch that stuck inside the left field foul pole. South Harrison, against Trenton starter Emma Roberts, seemed to take control of the game in the 3rd inning, batting 13 and scoring six times. There were seven base hits in the frame, with the Trenton defense twice unable to find outs, as moments of indecision on infield grounders kept the rally alive. Reeter relieved Roberts in the inning, and struck out Kaliska Madison of South Harrison with the bases loaded to prevent further damage.
Two of the biggest hits of the Trenton came off the bat of right fielder Jena Harris. Her bloop single with two outs and Shay Westerhof on second base in the 4th inning cut South Harrison’s lead to 6-3. After the two out flurry continued with four South Harrison errors and base hits by Lynch and Teya Cooksey, Trenton had rallied for the 7-6 advantage.
Trenton, now 6-20 on the season, will play Brookfield at 7 o’clock on Thursday night in the district semifinal round. South Harrison, a squad sure to continue its surge with a young and talented roster, ends the season in tough fashion, finishing at 16-6, including a third-place showing in the Grand River Conference’s Eastern Division.
In gaining the victory, Trenton junior Jenna Reeter scattered six hits, struck out five batters, and walked only one. South Harrison out-hit Trenton in the game 14-12.
