Milan boys rack up 191 points to win Wildcat Relays along with Green City Lady Gophers

The Milan Wildcats, with 191 points, rolled to a team victory in Wednesday afternoon’s “Wildcat Relays” at Cal Hubbard Field in Milan.  The Green City Gophers, with 109 points, finished second, followed by Novinger with 90 points.  Newtown-Harris (74 points) was 4th, North Harrison (59 points) fifth, with Grundy R-5 scoring 11 points, finishing 9th place in the 11 team meet.

The Green City girls continued their strong athletic year with a 172 point afternoon to give the Lady Gophers the Wildcat Relays title.  Brashear had 97 points to finish 2nd, followed by a good performance from the Tri-County Lady Mustangs, scoring 74 points to finish 3rd.  The Grundy R-5 girls were fourth with 65 points, while the host Milan Lady Wildcats tallied 41 points, finishing in the 7 slot.

In individual results, starting with the “field” events, Green City’s Nikita Powell took the girls high jump at 4’10”, with Milan’s Mauricio Curiel going 6 feet even to win the boys event.  Powell doubled up her gold medals with a win in the long jump, leaping 15 feet for the Lady Gophers win.  Devin Fields of Green City won the boys long jump, with a best effort of 18 feet, 9 inches.

The Lady Gophers winning surge continued to the triple jump, with freshman Brooke Littrell taking the title at 33 feet, 2 inches.  In the boy’s triple jump, Fields took 1st place for Green City, with a best distance of 39 feet, 6 inches.  The Lady Panthers of Grundy R-5 got in the winners circle in the discus toss, with senior Matana Munday throwing 103 feet, 5 inches for the title.  Junior Zane Roberts of Novinger took the boys discus, at 122 feet, 6 inches.  The shot put champions from the Wildcat Relays were Matana Munday of Grundy R-5 at 34 feet, 4 inches and Blake Foster of Newtown-Harris at 42 feet and 1 inch.  In the javelin toss, North Harrison junior Payton Craig won the girls event at 91 meters, with Novinger’s Roberts winning the boys javelin, at 136.1 meters.

In the relays, the host Milan boys flexed their running strength, taking 3 of the 4 races involved.  The Brashear Lady Tigers and Novinger Wildcats won the 4 by 100 races.  The 4 by 200 relay titles went to the Green City girls and Milan (Curiel, Fordyce, Lopez, Shaw) boys.  Taking the 4 by 400 races were the Bevier girls and Milan (Curiel, Fordyce, Dabney, Anaya) boys, while the Green City girls and Milan (Anaya, Dabney, Shaw, Fuentes) boys won the 4 by 800 relay races.

Taking the sprint hurdles events were Green City’s Katelyn Conner (girls 100 meters) and Bevier’s Cameron Shaw (boys 110 meters).  In the 300 meter hurdles, taking the victories were Katelyn Conner of Green City and Colten Fordyce of Milan.

Green City’s Conner continued her track domination for the Lady Gophers by taking the 100 meter dash, joined by boys champion Jesus Lopez of the host Milan Wildcats.  In the 200 meter dash, taking first-place wins were Green City’s Conner and Milan’s Lopez, repeating their work in the 100.  In the 400 meter dash, the victories went to Brashear’s Emily Mason and Milan’s Mauricio Curiel.  In the 800 races, titles were taken by Green City’s Blythe LaFaver and Milan’s Daniel Anaya.

In the distance runs, the champions in the 1600 meters were Vanessa Stimpson of Milan and Milan’s Daniel Anaya, while in the 3200 meter distance run, crossing the tape first were Tri-County’s Jaden Almond and Milan’s Raul Fuentes.
