Milan boys finish 4th at Section 4 meet, advance nine to Class 2 state track meet

The Bishop LeBlond boys, with 107 points, and Higginsville girls, with 74 1/2 points, claimed team titles at Saturday’s Class 2, Section 4 track and field meet at William Chrisman High School in Independence.  The Lathrop boys had 95 points to finish second, with Penney High of Hamilton in third place with 65 points, and the Milan Wildcats in fourth place, tallying 57 points.  The Lathrop Lady Mules, with 70 points, had a runner-up finish, followed by Plattsburg and Mid-Buchanan.  Top FOUR individual finishers from Saturday will advance to this weekend’s Class 2 state championships at Jefferson City High School.

In individual results, Milan senior Mauricio Curiel won the boy’s high jump title, at 6 feet, 6 inches.  Drake Lewis of Lathrop was 2nd and Carson Quint of Putnam County goes to state, courtesy of a fourth place finish.  Marceline’s Jaylea Bixenman was second in the girls high jump.

Gallatin senior Tanner Johnson won the pole vault at 13 feet. Marceline’s Dylan Wheeler was 3rd and Lathrop’s Drew O’Connor fourth.  On the girls side, Putnam County junior Jaylee Knowles won the Section 4 title at 9 feet, 6 inches. South Harrison’s Summer Beaty finished fourth, earning a trip to the “Capitol City”.

Lathrop junior Brock Lewis won the long jump competition, with Hamilton’s Brock Swindler in third place.  For the girls, East Buchanan’s Josie Fortney finished 1st with Putnam County’s Madison Simmons in 4th place.

In the triple jump, Hamilton’s Brock Swindler took the boys crown, at 43 feet, 9.75 inches.  Plattsburg’s Ethan Lowe was 2nd, with Lathrop teammates Justin Burns and Brock Lewis in 3rd and 4th.  For the girls, Fortney of East Buchanan was 2nd, with Mackenzie Brown of Carrollton 3rd, and East Buch’s Hannah Church 4th.

Ryan Valentine of Putnam County won the discus, at 144 feet and 3.5 inches, with Plattsburg’s Nick Kremer in 4th place. Lathrop’s Alex VanVelzer was 3rd in the girl’s discus.  Valentine doubled up with wins, taking the shot put at 46 feet, 0.75 inches.  Plattsburg’s Kremer was 2nd, and East Buchanan’s Jacob Boatwright 4th.  In the girls shot put, East Buchanan’s Anna Musser was 3rd.

Carrollton’s Owen Dobbins won the boys javelin at 168 feet, 2 inches.  Brookfield’s Jeremy Williams was fourth.  Kelsie Lewis of Plattsburg won the girls javelin, with Marceline’s Baylee Jobson 2nd and Plattsburg’s Sydney Stephens in fourth place.

In the relay races, winning the 4 by 100 were the LeBlond boys (Lathrop 2nd, Putnam County 3rd, Plattsburg 4th) and Lathrop girls (Plattsburg 3rd).  The 4 by 200 relays went to the LeBlond boys (Lathrop 2nd, Carrollton 3rd, Milan 4th) and Plattsburg girls (Lathrop 2nd, Marceline 3rd, Putnam County 4th).  The 4 by 400 relay champions are the Penney boys (Dixon, Ernat, Richman, Swindler) and Lathrop girls.  The Marceline girls were 2nd, while the Carrollton boys were 2nd and Milan boys 3rd.  In the 4 by 800 relays,  wins went to the Penney boys (Crawford, Richman, Ernat, Dixon) and Lady Huskers from Higginsville.  The Milan boys were 3rd, behind 2nd place Lathrop, but ahead of 4th place Marceline.  The Penney girls advanced with a 3rd place finish.

The sprints hurdles went to Lathrop’s Lewis in the 110 boys race, with Mules teammate Austin Davis 2nd and Brookfield’s Bryce Howerton 4th.  Lathrop’s Hannah Ballard won the girls 100 hurdles.  Brookfield’s Sydney Wilbeck was 2nd.  In the 300 boys hurdles, Swindler of Hamilton was 2nd, Nicholas Cain of Marceline 3rd, and Colten Fordyce of Milan in 4th place.  In the girls race, Lathrop’s MacKinzie Cantrell was 3rd, and Brookfield’s Maryanne Matzen 4th.

In the 100 meter dash, Plattsburg’s Jordan Kremer and 2nd in the boys event.  Hanna Williams of Plattsburg ran 12.55 seconds to win the girl’s race, with Fortney of East Buchanan finishing 3rd.  Kremer was fourth for Plattsburg in the 200, with Hanna Williams winning the 200 for the Lady Tigers. Breanna Blanton of Maysville was third and Hannah Meyers of Putnam County 4th place.

Winning the boys 400 was Sean Puffpaff of Carrollton (51.39). Derek Dixon of Hamilton was second, Mauricio Curiel of Milan 3rd, and Justin Thoeni of Carrollton 4th.  Plattsburg’s Williams took the 400, with Lathrop’s Madelyn Vonderfecht 3rd and Marceline’s Abbey Kussman in 4th place.

Derek Dixon of Penney was 2nd in the boys 800, with Justin Gannon of Lathrop 3rd, and Andrew Ernat of Penney in 4th place.  East Buchanan’s Samantha White was third in the girls 800.

Maysville’s Codey McNett moves to state with a 4th place finish in the boys 1600, with Brookfield’s James Gunn winning the boys 3200, with Andrew Rote of Plattsburg 4th.  Brookfield doubled up with 3200 meter wins, as Maryanne Matzen won the girls race.  Marceline’s Maycee Edgar was 2nd, while Penney High School’s Nora Ford was 4th.
