One of the newest additions to the MIAA is leaving in 2019, with Lindenwood University announcing its intentions, on Friday, to join the Great Lakes Valley Conference in July 1, 2019.  The move will make the St. Louis area school the 16th member of the conference, with Lindenwood VP of Athletics, Brad Wachter, saying in a news release, “We are beyond excited to be joining the Great Lakes Valley Conference.  Lindenwood has been competing in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) since the 2012-13 season, when it made the move from NAIA to NCAA Division II.

In the GLVC, Lindenwood will have shorter travel than as a member of the MIAA, a conference with roots more toward Kansas City than toward St. Louis.  Of note, Missouri-St. Louis, Maryville, and McKendree will be among the rival schools within an hour drive of the Lindenwood campus, with eight schools in the conference within a three-hour drive.

Established in 1978, the GLVC includes seven schools in Missouri (UMSL, Maryville, Missouri S&T, Drury, Rockhurst, Truman State, Drury and William Jewell), four in Illinois (McKendree, Quincy, Lewis and Illinois-Springfield), two in Indiana (Indianapolis and Southern Indiana) as well as Bellarmine in Kentucky. Southwest Baptist, of Bolivar, Mo., will also join beginning in 2019-20.
