Mercer spoils homecoming at Grundy County with doubleheader sweep

The Mercer girls and boys basketball teams traveled to Grundy County on Thursday night, returning home with a pair of HDC Conference victories.  The Lady Cardinals emerged victorious by a score of 56-37, led by 17 points from Rayne Kost, 13 from freshman Tori Meinecke, and 11 from (including a trio of three-point shots) from Aubrey Wilson.  The Lady Panthers had 12 points from point guard Breanna Carpio, with Morgan Axtell adding nine points (including a pair of three-pointers).

The Mercer boys trailed by two points at the half, with the Panthers aiming for their biggest victory of the season.  However, the second half was a different story, as the Cardinals caught, passed, and beat Grundy County by a score of 69-49.  Hunter Shipley led Mercer with 18 points, with Isaiah Morgana scoring 14 and Austin Nix 10.  For the Panthers, Cooper Lewis had 15 points with Wayne Baxter tallying 14.
