Meadville Eagles take quarterfinal wins in opening night of MHS Tournament

The Meadville Lady Eagles, seeded #5 in the 2017 Meadville Tournament, swung the mild upset over Northwestern High School on Monday night, opening the tourney with a 44-33 quarterfinal victory.  Reagin Klein led the Lady Eagles with 17 points while Karlin Fairchild added 10.  For Northwestern, Brynna Spencer had 11 points.  The win sends Meadville into a likely match-up with Class 1, #2 ranked Mercer, as the Lady Cardinals open the second day of the tournament on Tuesday at 4:30, against Bucklin-Macon County.  The girls semifinal involving Meadville will be Thursday afternoon at 4:30.

The Hale Lady Cardinals beat Linn County on Monday night, 45-25, as Bailey Stephens led Hale with 12 points.  Alexis Miller had 10 for the Lady Mustangs.  

The Meadville boys, seeded #1 in their own tournament, rolled to a 75-38 win over Bucklin-Macon County.  Dominik Gannon hit six 3 point shots in a team-high 18 point night for the Eagles, while Jase Cowan had 16, Dillon Seckington 12, and Ryan Young 11 points for MHS.  Connor Passig had 12 points for BMC.

The Eagles advance into an 8:15 boys semifinal on Thursday night to play Tri-County Conference rival Linn County, a 62-47 winner on Monday night over Hale.  Jase White had 19 points to lead the #4 seed Mustangs, while Kade Ward had 11, and Chadley Waltz 10 points.  Caleb Eddins had 14 points and Trent Hastings 11 for the Cardinals.

After the Mercer girls game this afternoon, the Mercer boys, seeded #3, battle Tina-Avalon at 5:45.  The late games from Meadville will be the Tina-Avalon girls against Grundy R-5 at 7:30, followed by the Grundy R-5 boys against Northwestern (the #2 seed) at 8:15.

Down the road from Meadville, the 57th annual Keytesville Tournament opened on Monday night, the Higbee girls beat Bevier and the Norborne girls downed Keytesville.  On the boys side, the #1 seeded Higbee squad beat Norborne while the Brunswick boys downed Brunswick.

In Tuesday night quarterfinal action from Keytesville High School, the Bunceton girls play Prairie Home at 4:30, followed by a boys game between those same schools at 5:45.  At 7 o’clock, the #1 seeded Southwest Livingston girls challenge Brunswick, with the #6 seed Southwest boys battling host Keytesville at 8:15.
