The Maysville Wolverines, through one quarter of Saturday night’s South Harrison Tournament boys championship game, trailed the Princeton Tigers 23-17, with the Tigers hopes of an upset boosted by a buzzer-beating shot from beyond half-court shot by sophomore Clay Evans, heard on Hot Country Z 101.7:Â
The Wolverines rugged front-court began to take control of the contest in the second quarter, outscoring the Tigers by five points, cutting the halftime deficit to one. By the second half, Maysville ran away from Princeton, winning the tournament title with a 70-57 victory in Bethany.
Tournament MVP Kobyn Metzger had 15 points for MHS, with the big-man tandem of Tanner Evans and Dillon Willis combining for 39 points, with 21 of those from Evans. The victory gives Maysville momentum heading into a Tuesday night GRC showdown at home against Gallatin.
Princeton, settling for second place in the tournament, had 20 points from Talan Holt and 16 points from Evans. The Tigers and Lady Tigers, on Tuesday night, will play host to the Putnam County Midgets, with coverage beginning at 6 o’clock on KTTN FM 92.3.Â
Joining Metzger on the boys all-tournament team were Holt and Willis, along with South Harrison’s Jad Cornett and Mercer’s Tyler Meinecke.
The girls championship game went to South Harrison, in thrilling fashion over Mercer, with the Lady Bulldogs handing the Lady Cardinals only their second loss of the season, 55-52. Â
Tournament MVP honors went to South Harrison junior Hannah Carter, joined in the All-Tourney team by Mercer’s Maddi Fisher and Rainey Michael, Princeton’s Addy Henke, and Northeast Nodaway’s Baylie Busby.
The third place games, from Saturday, went to the Northeast Nodaway girls over Princeton 47-45, with the South Harrison boys beating Mercer 65-53. The consolation finals, from Friday night, went to the East Harrison girls over Tri-County 41-32, and the North Harrison boys, 49-43 over Northeast Nodaway.
The Milan Tournament wrapped up Saturday night with championship hardware going to the Brookfield girls and North Missouri boys. The North Missouri Knights beat Milan 51-43 while the Brookfield Lady ‘Dogs beat Marceline 44-36.
Third place hardware went to the Milan girls, 53-44 over Linn County, and the Putnam County boys, 81-37 over Brashear.
Fifth place results were Putnam County over Novinger in a girls game 66-47, with the Novinger boys downing Brookfield 61-43. Seventh place went to the North Missouri girls 50-36 over Brashear, and the Marceline boys, going overtime to down Linn County, 53-45.

The Chillicothe Hornets split championship games on the final day of the Lawson Tournament, with the Lady Hornets routing Lawson 52-25, while the Richmond boys downed Chillicothe 76-57. The West Platte Blue Jays won both third place games, with the girls beating Cameron 43-34, and the boys defeating Gallatin 66-60.
Girls All-Tournament team members were MVP Jessica Reeter of Chillicothe, Chillicothe’s Kayanna Cranmer and Lyla Beetsma, Lawson’s Evie Caresia and Kinley Wilkins, and West Platte’s Madisyn Matlick.
Boys All-Tournament team members were MVP Jack Gogue of Richmond, Chillicothe’s Griff Bonderer, Richmond’s Eli Steele, West Platte’s Charlie Kinslow, Gallatin’s Isaac Bird, and Cameron’s T.J. Best.
On Friday night, the Penney Hornets and Trenton Bulldogs split games in the 7th place contests at Lawson High School. In action heard on KTTN FM 92.3, the Lady Bulldogs won the opener 42-31, with Mirena King scoring 14 points and Astrid Soriano 11 for THS. Penney had a game-high 15 points from Izzy Baker. Trenton improves to 5-10 while dropping Penney to 0-15.
The Penney boys rallied from a 21-18 deficit after one quarter, outscoring Trenton 20-6 in the second quarter and cruising in the second half to a 73-56 victory. The win, Hamilton’s third of the season, was led by 20 points from Jacob Miller, with Titus McBee adding 15. Trenton, dropping to 2-11, had 19 points from Kiefer Tolson and 11 from Gabe Novak.
The fifth place games went to the Richmond girls, 52-50 over Gallatin; and the CAmeron boys 67-48 over Lawson.
The Osborn/Stewartsville “Wildcards” Tournament wrapped up on Friday night with these scores:Â
