The best volleyball teams in Missouri converged on the Show-Me Center in Cape Girardeau over the weekend, for the Show-Me Showdown, including semifinals, championship matches.
For the first time in school history, Maryville won a state championship in volleyball, taking a 25-20, 25-21, 25-22 victory over Park Hills Central on Friday morning. The Lady Spoofhounds finish the season at 21-2, with Park Hills Central at 27-6-3.
Hermann swept Springfield Catholic in the third place match, 25-11, 25-18, 25-12.
In Thursday’s semifinals, Maryville downed Hermann 15-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-22, while Park Hills Central defeated Springfield Catholic 35-33, 22-25, 25-19, 25-19.
Lawson High School came into the Class 2 semifinal unbeaten, with eyes squarely on a state championship, however the Lady Cards ran into a tough Christian squad in Friday’s semifinal round, falling 25-21, 25-23, 25-12. In the other semifinal, Valle Catholic rolled past Miller 28-26, 25-22, 25-15.
Lawson settled for fourth place and a final record of 25-2, falling to Miller in the third place contest, 25-16, 15-25, 25-19, 25-15.
In the Class 2 championship match, Christian won a five-set thriller against Valle Catholic, taking a 25-22, 27-25, 22-25, 20-25, 19-17 victory over the Warriors.
The Class 1 championship went to Advance High School, with a four-set win over Lesterville on Saturday afternoon, 25-13, 25-15, 18-25, 25-8. Advance finishes the season 35-1-2, with Lesterville at 25-11-2.
Cass-Midway swept New Haven in the third place match 26-24, 25-15, 25-23. The Vikings ended the year at 23-2, with New Haven at 12-14-3.
Advance beat New Haven 25-9, 25-9, 25-7 while Lesterville downed Cass-Midway 25-10, 19-25, 25-23, 25-22 in the semifinal round.
In the Class 4 semifinals, Willard swept Nerinx Hall 25-11, 25-19, 25-11, while Parkway West outlasted Platte County 25-27, 25-19, 23-25, 25-18, 15-12. Willard won the state title in four sets over Parkway West 25-8, 20-25, 25-9, 25-13. The third place match went to Platte County, 25-21, 25-18, 25-19 over Nerinx Hall.
In Class 5, the semifinals went to Nixa, 25-21, 25-15, 25-19 over St. Francis Borgia, and Liberty North, a 25-16, 25-18, 25-15 win over St. Dominic. Â
Borgia won the third place match over St. Dominic 25-22, 24-26, 26-24, 25-21, while the state championship went to unbeaten Liberty North, as the Lady Eagles swept away Nixa, 26-24, 25-20, 25-16. Liberty North won all 24 of its matches played this season.Â
