The Trenton Bulldogs met the Maryville Spoofhounds in a Class 1 state tennis sectional on Tuesday afternoon, with the ‘Hounds shutting out Trenton 5-0, ending the Bulldogs season with a dual record of 11-5. Maryville went onto the state quarterfinals, where the Spoofhounds downed MEC rival St. Pius X 5-1, advancing to next Saturday morning’s state semifinal round against Bolivar.
Out of nine planned matches, three of the singles and all three doubles competitions were completed between Trenton and Maryville. In the #4 singles match, William Sheil defeated Jacob White 6-1, 6-0, with Kyler Skidmore shutting out Jake Horton at #5 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Trenton only managed two points in three combined doubles matches, with Braydn Sager and Victor Markell falling 8-2 to Kason Teale and Jaxson Staples in the #1 match. At #2 doubles, George Groumoutis and Brody Stagner of Maryville beat Isaac Dixon and Jacob White of Trenton 8-0, with William Sheil and Kyler Skidmore of the Spoofhounds, in the #3 match, shutting out the Bulldogs tandem of Jake Horton and Henry Lasley 8-0.
Maryville advances to play Bolivars at 9 AM on Saturday, May 25th at the Cooper Complex in Springfield in one Class 1 state semifinal. Six schools came into Wednesday morning with a chance to reach the other semifinal, with that list including North County, Lutheran South, Clayton, Metro, Tolton Catholic, and Moberly. Tolton Catholic will play Moberly in a state quarterfinal on Wednesday at 12 noon.
