With frigid temperatures at the Mozingo Lake Golf Course in Maryville on Monday morning, the Class 1 state golf tournament was delayed by two hours.  That delay meant that by the end of the first day, several players, including Trenton High School’s Werthen Gass, had not finished their first 18 holes.

Gass, a THS senior, will finish her final hole of the opening round this (Tuesday) morning.  Trenton Coach Travis Mullenx says there are eight groups with four or less holes to play.  After those holes are completed, a shotgun start will be utilized to get the next 18 holes in.  Through 17 holes, Gass was sitting at 24 over par, in 28th place overall.

As a team, Chillicothe is in seventh place, with a first day score of 147 over par, that is 11 strokes better than 8th place Kirksville and eight strokes behind sixth-place Stanberry.  Springfield Catholic holds the Class 1 lead at 74 over par, one stroke better than 2nd place John Burroughs, with MICDS, at 78 over par, in third place.

Penney High School’s Samantha Cornelius, the Section 3 champion, is in a sixth place tie after 18 holes, with a score of 12-over 84.  Kayla Pfitzner of Springfield Catholic has the lead at 80, followed by teammate Reagan Zibilski at 81.

For Chillicothe, first round scores were sophomore Hallie Jones at 102, senior Riley Brobst 104, senior Maddie Lamp at 113, sophomore Gabby Hapes at 116, and Hannah Haakonstad at 124.

In Class 2, at Swope Park in Kansas City, Megan Propeck of Notre Dame de Sion has the individual lead, in a tie with Brooke Biermann of Lafayette Wildwood, both at 1-under par 71.  Grace Aromando of St. Joseph’s Academy is third at 75.  St. Joseph’s Academy leads the team chase at 313, followed by Notre Dame de Sion’s 319 and the 336 from Columbia Rock Bridge.
