The Marceline Lady Tigers withstood a strong challenge from #4 seed Trenton to beat the Lady Bulldogs 7-3 on Thursday night, advancing to the Class 2, District 6 championship game in Unionville.  The loss ends Trenton’s season at 15-15, with anticipation for quick improvement for 2023 for a program that was surging toward the end of this season and does not lose a senior to graduation next season.

The powerhouse Marceline offense broke on top in the bottom of the third inning with a pair of runs, but Trenton put a scare into the top seed in the top of the 5th, scoring three runs to rip the lead away from MHS.  The Lady Tigers scored a single run to tie the game at 3 in the bottom of the 5th, setting up the game’s biggest moment, a game-winning grand slam home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Trenton’s fifth inning uprising began with Katelyn Clark reaching first base via error.  Kaegan Croy followed with a single, and Avery Clark a base on balls.  Jena Harris tied the game with a two-run RBI single, followed by a base hit by Mirena King that gave the Lady Bulldogs a brief lead.

Marceline advanced to play South Harrison in Saturday’s title tilt, with the Lady Tigers posting a 8-0 victory, sending Marceline into the Class 2 state quarterfinals.  South Harrison had advanced through Thursday’s semifinal round with a 16-6 win over Brookfield.

In quarterfinal round action from Putnam County High School, scores were Trenton over Penney on Tuesday night 13-3, with South Harrison downing Milan 10-1 and Brookfield taking out Putnam County 11-1 on Wednesday night.
