Lady Mustangs earn road win at Newtown-Harris

The Tri-County girls earned their first win of the 2016-2017 season on Thursday night, defeating the Newtown-Harris Lady Tigers, 30-26.  Gabby Nielson scored 20 points in the loss for Newtown-Harris.  The boys game from Newtown tipped to the Tigers, 67-46.  Andrew Garcia scored 18, Josh Allen 11, and Ryan Coltrain 10 points for NHHS.

Three games were played at the KCI Conference Tournament in Gower on Thursday night.  The East Buchanan girls took the consolation final against Penney, winning 51-46.  Madison McCreary scored 21 points and Josie Fortney 18 for the Lady Bulldogs, with Nora Ford netting 14 points and McKauley Prothero 12 for the Lady Hornets.  The Plattsburg boys nipped rival Lathrop in the boys consolation final, 54-52 in overtime, while the West Platte girls took a 55-49 win over Lawson, winning the third place hardware.

The KCI Tournament wraps up Friday night at East Buchanan High School, with the East Buchanan boys hosting Mid-Buchanan for third place at 5 PM, followed by the girls title game between Lathrop and Mid-Buchanan at 6:30, and the Penney boys battling Lawson for a championship at 8 o’clock.

From Grundy County High School on Thursday night, the Panther teams were swept by Green City.  The Lady Gophers took a 51-43 road win, as Brooke Littrell scored 25 points.  The Lady Panthers had 17 points from Matana Munday and 11 points from Dani Peterson.  The Green City boys downed Grundy R-5 69-36.  Wayne Baxter and Jonathan Stimpson both scored 10 points for Grundy, while Bryson Gann pulled down 10 rebounds.

The Polo girls won at Winston, 36-31, as Jenni Farmer had 13 points for the only double-figure scoring output of the night.  The #2 ranked (Class 1) Winston boys had a workmanlike 53-23 win over Polo, a Logan Caldwell had 20 points and Griffen Harris 14 for the Redbirds.

Stanberry won both ends of a varsity doubleheader with Northeast Nodaway, taking the girls contest 57-24 and the boys game 68-38.
