Lady Huskers, Bulldogs win team titles at Trenton Relays

The Trenton High School girls and boys track teams hosted the annual Trenton Relays on Thursday afternoon, with 15 schools, including the host Bulldogs, converging on C.F. Russell Stadium for the mid-season meet.

Taking the team titles were the Lafayette County (Higginsville) girls, who racked up 147 points to beat the host Lady Bulldogs 124, and the Trenton boys, with 106 points, ten better than the runner-up Milan Wildcats total of 96.

Brookfield’s girls (78.5 points) finished third, with the Princeton Lady Tigers and Maysville Lady Wolverines (32 points) in a tie for 6th place.  The Princeton boys racked up 65 points to finish 4th, with Brookfield in 5th with 55 points.  Other schools at the Trenton Relays were Carrollton, Wellington-Napoleon, North Harrison, Gilman City, Cainsville, Tri-County, Winston, Mercer, and Gallatin.

Winning individual titles on Thursday were Wellington-Napoleon senior Mariah Rudy (4 feet, 10 inches) and Milan senior Mauricio Curiel (5 feet, 10 inches) in the high jump.  Two future NCMC Lady Pirates finished 2nd and 3rd in the high jump, with Gilman City Hailey Burrows followed by Trenton’s Whitley Richman.  Pattonsburg’s Brett Curtis had a 2nd place finish, followed by Brookfield’s Khalil Walker (tied for 3rd with Milan’s Hunter Shaw).

In the pole vault, Lydia Wetter of Higginsville went 8 feet, 6 inches to take the title, followed by Trenton’s Cassidy Trump in second.  Mason Hooyman of the host Lady Bulldogs was fourth.  Tanner Johnson of Gallatin won the boys pole vault title at 12 feet, 6 inches.  Tanner Wallace of Brookfield was 3rd.

In the long jump, Brookfield’s Sydney Wilbeck went 15 feet, 5 inches to take the championship over Trenton’s Shayla Woodside, who was 3 inches behind in 2nd.  Austin Burkeybile won the long jump for the Trenton Bulldog boys, going 19 feet, 11 1/2 inches.  Brookfield’s Blake Cavanaugh was second, followed by Pattonsburg’s Peyton Jones.

Carrollton freshman Mackenzie Brown won the triple jump, with a best effort of 33 feet, 10 3/4 inches besting the 31 foot, 10 1/2 inch leap of Trenton’s Shayla Woodside, who finished 2nd.  Pattonsburg’s Peyton Jones won the triple jump for the Panther boys, at 42 feet, 4 1/4 inches.  Calvin Berwanger of Princeton (38′ 11 3/4″) was 2nd, followed by Brookfield’s Blake Cavanaugh.

In the throwing events, Higginsville’s Sydney Haynes won the discus toss at 114 feet, 5 inches.  Maysville’s Payton Flanders was 3rd.  Wellington-Napoleon junior Stone Willoughby had a best throw of 129 feet, 9 1/2 inches, winning the discus title over Trenton’s Jadan Whitney, who had a best throw of 128 feet to win the runner-up spot.

Emily Brown, a Maysville High School freshman, took the shot put title, at 35 feet, 1 inch.  The boys shot put went to Carrollton junior Hayden Kilson, at 46 feet, 3 inches.  Gallatin’s Graydee Rains was third.

In the javelin toss, Carrollton junior Kayla Enciso won, at 115 feet.  North Harrison junior Payton Craig was second.  Trenton’s Whitley Richman, at 86 feet, 2 inches, was fourth.  Carrollton’s Owen Dobbins made it a javelin title sweep for the Trojans, at 160 feet, 4 inches.  Winston’s Saxton Pliley (130′ 6″) was second and Milan freshman Ryan Dabney (116′ 3″) third.

The 4 by 800 relay titles went to the Higginsville girls (11 minutes, 6.22 seconds) and the Princeton boys (Calvin Berwanger, Blaine Millburn, Harrison Smith, Logan Dunkin), who ran 8 minutes, 54.62 seconds to outdistance runner-up Trenton’s 8:56.42.  The Bulldogs team was made up of Zane Rottman, Alex Parrack, Zac Smith, and Cole Schilling.  The Trenton girls were second, with Tenna Roberts, McKayla Blackburn, Cassidy Trump, and Abbie Shuler running 11:31.06.

Whitley Richman of Trenton won the 100 meter hurdles race, with a time of 17.68 seconds, 0.24 better than runner-up Maryanne Matzen of Brookfield.  The 110 boys hurdles winner, with a time of 17.37 seconds, was Wellington-Napoleon senior Dylan Brockmeyer.  Trevor Ireland of Pattonsburg (18.5) was second and Trenton’s Chase Marsh (19.33) third.

Winning the 100 meter dashes were Princeton sophomore Jaelyn Thomas (13.34 seconds) and Higginsville junior Elijah Thirkield (11.65 seconds).  Milan’s Jesus Lopez, at 11.71 second, was second in the boys race.

The Trenton Lady Bulldogs, with a time of 1:53.57, won the 4 by 200 relay, with Thelma Guerrero, Lana Raymo, Lexi Whitaker, and Mason Hooyman combining in the victory.  The Carrollton boys beat Milan to the tape by 0.52 seconds to win the 4 by 200.  Trenton was third, with the Bulldogs time of 1:35.96 sitting 1.75 seconds behind the Trojans winning effort.

The Milan Lady Wildcats picked up a victory, and 10 points, from sophomore Vanessa Stimpson in the 1600 meter run, at 6 minutes, 12 seconds. Sophie Pliley of Winston was second (6:18.06) with Gilman City’s Megan Cottrell 3rd, and Trenton’s McKayla Blackburn 4th.  The boys 1600 was won by Trenton sophomore Zane Rottman, at 4 minutes, 51.68 seconds.  Princeton took the 2nd and 3rd spots, with Logan Dunkin followed by Preston Thomas.

Higginsville’s girls won the 4 by 100 sprint relay, with a time of 54.78 seconds.  Trenton was 2nd, with the time of Guerrero, Shuler, Whitaker, and Hooyman, just 0.35 seconds off the Lady Huskers pace.  Maysville took 3rd.  The boys 4 by 100 went to the Trenton team of Wyatt Whittle, Matthew Sibbit, Brian Ewing, and Austin Burkeybile, running 46.41 to beat runner-up Brookfield by 0.4 seconds.  Maysville’s boys, matching the girls finish for the Wolverines, were 3rd.

Taking the titles in the 400 meter runs were Higginsville senior Mariah Elmore and Carrollton senior Sean Puffpaff.  For the girls, Brookfield’s Lauren Rhodes was 2nd followed by Princeton’s Jaelyn Thomas.  Princeton’s Harrison Smith was runner-up in the boys race, with Milan’s Curiel third.

Brookfield’s Maryanne Matzen and Trenton’s Whitley Richman had a spirited “race to the tape” in the 300 hurdles, with Matzen besting Richman by 0.3 seconds (51.84 to 52.14).  Brookfield’s Sydney Wilbeck was third.  Colten Fordyce took the 300 hurdles title for the Milan Wildcat boys, with a time of 42.04 seconds.  Trenton’s Carson Radcliff was second.  

In the 800 meter run, Higginsville senior Mariah Elmore ran 2:27.07 to race to the win, followed by Milan’s Stimpson (2:45.39) and Trenton’s Tenna Roberts (2:44.87) and Cassidy Trump (2:51.15).  Milan junior Daniel Anaya won the boys race, with a winning time of 2:10.63, beating runner-up Zane Rottman of Trenton by 1.6 seconds.  Brookfield’s James Gunn was 3rd, and Milan’s Ryan Dabney 4th.

Princeton’s Jaelyn Thomas continued her superb day with a win in the 200 meter dash, running 27.68 seconds.  Trenton’s Thelma Guerrero (28.44) was third.  Carrollton’s Puffpaff won the boys 200 title, running 23.49.  Milan’s Jesus Lopez ran 23.86 to finish 3rd, with Trenton’s Brian Ewing in 4th place.

The winners of the grueling 3200 meter races were Brookfield’s Matzen (followed by North Harrison’s Mardee Sadowsky and Brookfield’s Leslie Dean) and Princeton’s Logan Dunkin, with a time of 10:50.19 besting the 10:51.86 of runner-up Daniel Rodriguez of Trenton.  Preston Thomas of Princeton finished third.

Trenton’s girls, in the 4 by 400 relay, finished second to Higginsville, with 6 1/2 seconds difference between the teams.  The Lady Bulldogs squad was made up of Tenna Roberts, Shayla Woodside, McKayla Blackburn, and Lexi Whitaker.  Carrollton won the boys 4 by 400, with Milan (Anaya, Curiel, Dabney, Fordyce) 2nd and Trenton (Radcliff, Ewing, Smith, Whittle) third.
