Twice this regular season, the rival Trenton Bulldogs and Chillicothe Hornets locked horns in girls tennis action, with the Lady Bulldogs emerging with hard-fought victories, undoubtedly a key factor in Trenton earning the top-seed and home-court advantage for this week’s Class 1, District 15 tournament.
Both Trenton and Chillicothe cruised through semifinal tests on Tuesday night, with the Lady Bulldogs beating Carrollton 5-0, and Chillicothe taking down #3 seed Excelsior Springs 5-1, sending the Lady Hornets to Trenton High School’s Carpenter-Bosley Courts on Wednesday afternoon for the final head-to-head match of the season between the teams.
This time, in yet another close duel, the Lady Hornets did just enough to get the team win, taking the District 15 championship plaque back to Livingston County with a 5-4 triumph. The teams split six singles matches, with Trenton winning at the #1, #2, and #3 level, while Chillicothe won matches at the #4, #5, and #6 positions.
In doubles, Chillicothe’s side won the #2 and #3 matches, with the #1 doubles duel going to Trenton in tiebreak fashion.

With players on both sides battling overcast skies and constant rain showers throughout the course of the duel, the final match, with the teams tied at 4-4, was a marathon, with Trenton’s Harley Hall battling Chillicothe’s Audrey Snider in the #5 singles match. Snider won the first set 6-4, only to see Hall keep the Bulldogs hopes of a district title alive with a 6-4 win in the second set. The third set went 16 points, with Snider able to pull away from Hall late, surging from a 4-4 tie to a 10-6 tiebreaker triumph.
The victory for Chillicothe sends the Lady Hornets to Monday’s sectional round action, joined by District 16 champion Bishop LeBlond, District 13 champion Harrisonville, and the District 14 champion, with the results of the Lafayette County at Marshall duel yet to be posted. The sectional round will be played at either Lafayette County or Marshall, with the Huskers/Owls winner battling LeBlond in one sectional, with Chillicothe playing Harrisonville in the other. The two winners stick around to play one another in the state quarterfinals, with the surviving team earning a spot in the Class 1 girls tennis “Final Four”.
