The Milan High School girls basketball team traveled to Trenton High School on Monday night, for a first-place battle with the Lady Bulldogs for the lead in the Grand River Conference Eastern Division, in a doubleheader broadcast on KTTN FM 92.3.
In a statement game in the still-young career of Lady Wildcat sophomore Cady Pauley, the Lady ‘Cats emerged with a 58-51 win, behind 40 points from the standout 10th grader and 16 big-points, including a game-clinching three in the final minute of regulation from Jordyn Gray. The win pushes Milan’s girls to 10-6 on the season, and 4-0 in the GRC East with three conference games remaining before the conference’s crossover games at King City on Saturday, February 15th.
The loss for Trenton is doubly damaging to the Lady Bulldogs hopes of repeating as conference champions, with Milan holding the lead over Trenton, and also owning head-to-head advantage in the event of a tiebreaker scenario. Maci Moore had 26 points for THS (8-6, 3-1), with Teya Cooksey and Chandler Lynch adding eight points each.
In the boys contest, held as part of Trenton’s courtwarming, the Wildcats dominated the Bulldogs, cruising to an 82-49 win. Ryan Dabney led Milan (15-1, 4-0) with 23 points, with Eddie Gonzalez and Dre Morehead each scoring 14. The win keeps the ‘Cats unbeaten in conference play, tied with Princeton, with a showdown for a potential divisional crown looming at Princeton High School on Thursday, February 6th.
Trenton (2-12, 0-4) had 23 points from Brycin Loyd while Gavin Roeder had six points. The Trenton girls and boys are in the Hamilton Tournament for the remainder of the week, with the Milan girls hosting Harrisburg on Friday night, before the Lady ‘Cats and Wildcats head to Moberly Area Community College for a mid-afternoon doubleheader on Saturday against the Monroe City Panthers.
