The Milan Lady Wildcats and Trenton Lady Bulldogs played for the second time within the past month within Trenton’s borders on Friday night, with the second matchup coming at the Ketcham Community Center in the Class 3, District 16 championship encounter.
By the end of the night, Milan survived behind All-State selection Cady Pauley, who scored 15 of her 36 points in the final quarter, giving the Lady Wildcats a thrilling 52-44 victory, sending the Lady ‘Cats back to the Class 3 state playoffs, and ending Trenton’s season in the district championship game for the second time in three years.
Pauley’s 36 was boosted in the third quarter by timely three-point shots hit by Emily Menchaca and Hallie Weaver, as a trio of made three-pointers helped to hold off a strong Trenton surge, keeping the tight advantage to the GRC champions at 37-31.
Milan will play East Buchanan in the Class 3 sectionals at Truman State University in Kirksville on Wednesday night, moving to a record of 22-6, while Trenton ends the year with a mark of 17-11.
Mirena King had 12 points and Gracyn Rongey 10 for Trenton.
