University of Missouri senior linebacker Cale Garrett, a graduate of Kearney High School, was named the Southeastern Conference’s Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. In Saturday’s 42-10 win over Troy, Garrett had six tackles and a quarterback sack, while adding two interceptions.
Unfortunately for both Garrett and Mizzou, the honor came as news broke of the linebacker’s pectoral tendon injury, suffered during Saturday’s game. Surgery to repair the injury has been scheduled for Tuesday, and while the Mizzou program has not publicly said the injury is season-ending, there are only seven games remaining in the regular season, making a return dicey at best.
Garrett is leading Missouri with 39 tackles, one season after tying for first in the SEC with 68 stops.
The news on the knee injury suffered by senior quarterback Kelly Bryant that kept the Clemson transfer on the sidelines for Saturday’s second half was much more promising. Missouri is calling the injury a “knee sprain”, but it is not expected to keep Bryant from playing this Saturday against the Ole Miss Rebels at Faurot Field.
With Garrett out at middle linebacker for the foreseeable future, the starting job for the Ole Miss game is expected to go to either sophomore Cameron Wilkins or junior Jamal Brooks.
