The Kansas City Current’s (16-3-7, 55 pts., No. 4 Seed) remarkable 2024 season came to a close Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 semifinal loss to the Orlando Pride (18-2-6, 60pts., No. 1 Seed) at Inter Miami CF Stadium.
Debinha opened the scoring for the Current in the 33rd minute, assisted by Michelle Cooper. Orlando equalized eight minutes later through Haley McCutcheon. The Pride took the lead with Barbra Banda’s 53rd-minute goal and extended it to 3-1 with Marta’s 82nd-minute score.
Vanessa DiBernardo’s penalty kick in the 13th minute of second-half stoppage time sparked a late Current rally, but ultimately proved insufficient.
Despite the loss, the Current’s 2024 campaign was historic:
- Set franchise records for wins (16), points (55) and shutouts (9)
- Broke NWSL record for total goals (57)
- Won NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup and The Women’s Cup
- Opened the world’s first purpose-built stadium for a women’s professional sports team
“Obviously we lost this game, but we cannot allow it to define our season,” said head coach Vlatko Andonovski. “I’m proud of the team for their successes on and off the field.”
“This year hurts, but it gives us hope and fire for next year,” said Lo LaBonta. “We have the tools, and everyone wants to win.”
