The future of both the Kansas City Royals and the Kansas City Chiefs in Kansas City was cast into uncertainty after Jackson County residents overwhelmingly voted against a sales tax measure aimed at funding a new downtown ballpark and major renovations to Arrowhead Stadium.
The initiative, which aimed to replace an existing three-eighths of a cent sales tax that has been funding the upkeep of Truman Sports Complex, was rejected by more than 58% of voters. The Royals and Chiefs had proposed using the tax revenue to fund their respective projects, with the Royals planning a $2 billion-plus ballpark district and the Chiefs proposing an $800 million overhaul of Arrowhead Stadium.
Royals owner John Sherman and Chiefs president Mark Donovan expressed disappointment with the outcome but acknowledged the democratic process. Sherman emphasized his commitment to Kansas City but left open the possibility of exploring other options if necessary. Donovan echoed Sherman’s sentiments and emphasized the importance of finding the best path forward for both teams and their fans.
While the current lease at Truman Sports Complex runs through Jan. 31, 2031, Sherman has indicated that the Royals would not continue playing at Kauffman Stadium beyond the 2030 season. The Chiefs, however, are hopeful of remaining at Arrowhead Stadium.
The stadium plans faced significant public pushback, with criticism directed at the teams’ lack of transparency and concrete plans. The Royals’ proposed ballpark district faced delays and uncertainty over its location, while concerns were raised about the impact on local businesses and neighborhoods in the Crossroads District.
Despite the setback, both teams remain committed to their respective projects. The Royals aim to move into their new stadium by opening day in 2028, while the Chiefs emphasize the importance of financing to properly renovate Arrowhead Stadium.
The outcome of the vote has left the future of both franchises in Kansas City uncertain, with potential implications for their long-term presence in the city.
