The ownership group of the Kansas City Current announced plans Monday for a $800 million waterfront development project along the Missouri River, anchored by the team’s newly opened stadium.
CPKC Stadium, home of the National Women’s Soccer League team, will be the hub of the project, which includes residential units, public recreation spaces, and restaurants. The project, funded by over $200 million in private funds, is expected to break ground later this year.
Chris and Angie Long, part of the KC Current ownership group, said the project aims to reconnect Kansas Citians to their riverfront, bringing energy and activity to the water. The development will feature modern glass and stone buildings, a promenade, and public spaces for year-round events.
The project comes after residents voted down a sales tax initiative that would have funded renovations to Arrowhead Stadium and a new Royals stadium. Instead, the KC Current’s privately financed $117 million stadium will be the centerpiece of the waterfront district.
Marquee Development and Perkins Eastman are leading the project, which is expected to deliver over $210 million in economic output for the city over 30 years. A portion of the residences will be set aside for lower-income housing.
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas praised the project, saying it will connect residents and visitors to entertainment, housing, and retail opportunities, generating millions in economic activity and thousands of jobs for generations to come.
