With the merger between Sprint and T-Mobile continuing, the over-decade old Sprint Center in downtown Kansas City is getting a new name. In a press release issued on Thursday afternoon, it was announced that moving forward, the arena will be known as “T-Mobile Arena”.
T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert, in announcing the change, said, “I couldn’t be prouder to announce T-Mobile Center and show the Kansas City community that we’re deeply invested in the home of our second headquarters! We’re proud to be with you, and when it’s safe to re-open, we’re bringing you some incredible Un-carrier experiences. Kansas City has a rich culture, known for live entertainment, sports, a thriving arts scene, and my personal favorite, Kansas City BBQ, and we are honored to help bring it all to life in T-Mobile Center well into the next decade! Get ready for a good time!”
The signage on the interior scoreboard in the facility is expected to change next month, with the change already noted on the venue’s website. T-Mobile Center was built in 2008 to serve as a replacement facility for the aging Kemper (now Hy-Vee) Arena, and is the host of the annual Big 12 men’s basketball tournament, in addition to numerous concerts and shows next door to the Power and Light District off Grand Boulevard.
