The Milan Wildcats, ranked #10 in Class 1 in the latest high school football state poll, battled both muddy field conditions and a tough squad from South Harrison High School to a scoreless draw through four quarters of play on Friday night at Cal Hubbard Field.
Going overtime for the first time this season, Milan senior fullback Jamuel Pagan scored on a one-yard plunge to win the game for the unbeaten (8-0, 6-0) Wildcats, in a game heard locally on KTTN FM 92.3.
With a muddy field deteriorating throughout the contest, the game turned into a muddy, defensive duel dominated by rushing attempts, with fans in attendance at Milan’s “Pit” awaiting a game-turning play in regulation that never occurred. South Harrison’s best chance to win the game came late in regulation, after a 33-yard pass to Collin Haffey, but the Wildcat defense held the Bulldogs, forcing overtime.
South Harrison had the ball first in the extra session, but was held on downs, giving the Wildcats a chance to win. On the game’s pivotal play, junior quarterback Ryan Dabney hit tight end Alexis Roman on a 21-yard pass play down to the South Harrison 1 yard line, with Pagan getting over the goal line on the next play to win the game for MHS.
The loss drops South Harrison out of the chase for the Grand River Conference title, as the Bulldogs are now 5-3 overall, and 4-2 in the GRC, two games back of Milan with one week to play.
Milan can clinch the conference title with a win over Polo this Friday night at 7 o’clock at the Pit. South Harrison, in a game to be carried on KTTN FM 92.3, will play host to the Princeton Tigers on Friday night at 7, in a match-up of rivals tied for third place in the GRC standings. Â
