Yuli Gurriel took advantage of a crucial throwing error by pitcher Jordan Hicks to score from first base, leading the Miami Marlins to a dramatic 10-9 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. With Gurriel and pinch-runner Garrett Hampson on base, Hicks made a high throw that sailed past first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and rolled out of play, allowing both runners to score. The Cardinals had taken their first lead of the game in the ninth inning when Jordan Walker hit a two-run homer off Marlins closer A.J. Puk. However, the Marlins fought back and secured the win.

The Cardinals had rallied twice to tie the game, with Bryan De La Cruz’s RBI double in the sixth inning giving the Marlins a 7-6 lead. The Cardinals managed to cut the deficit to one run in the seventh, but the Marlins held on for the win. Nolan Arenado had a strong performance for the Cardinals, hitting three doubles and contributing to the team’s comeback efforts.

The Marlins had initially built a five-run lead in the first inning, capitalizing on Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore’s struggles. However, the Cardinals battled back, and the Marlins squandered their early advantage. Marlins rookie outfielder Dane Myers made a crucial defensive play, robbing Arenado of an extra-base hit with a spectacular catch at the fence. Myers also had a base hit and an RBI in the game.

With the loss, the Cardinals matched their season low by falling 16 games under .500. They have had a slow start to the season and have blown 18 save opportunities. Cardinals center fielder Tommy Edman was a late scratch due to wrist discomfort but entered the game as a defensive replacement.

The Marlins will send RHP Eury Perez to the mound in the series finale against the Cardinals’ RHP Jack Flaherty.
