Hawks fly to Monday night home win, defeating Newtown-Harris 67-44

The Gilman City boys defeated the HDC Conference rival Newtown-Harris Tigers on Monday night, salvaging a split of the doubleheader at the Gilman gymnasium, 67-44.  In the middle two quarters, the Hawks outscored the Tigers 35-16, pulling away from a tight 17-15 score at the end of the first quarter.

Kaleb Bjornlie paced the Hawks with 15 points, with Jory Stotts putting in 14 points, and sophomore Jacob Zerbe 13.

Newtown-Harris won the girls game between the schools on Monday night, 30-27.  Lindsey Snuffer and Sidney Gibson both had nine points in the loss for Gilman City.

Elsewhere on Monday night, the Lawson Lady Cardinals rallied from a 25-19 halftime deficit, outscoring visiting Chillicothe by 14 points in the second half in a 56-48 victory for the KCI Conference squad.  Lawson was led by senior point guard Taylor Dolt with 14 points.  Laken Manns and Natalie Schnetzler each had 10 in the win.  For Chillicothe, Hunter Keithley had a game-high 15 points.  Kennedie Kieffer contributed 14.

The Tina-Avalon defeated the visiting Meadville Lady Eagles, 55-43.  The Lady Dragons balanced scoring proved to provide a critical piece of T-A’s winning formula, with Hannah Colliver scoring 17, Sam Rounkles 14, and Haley Rucker 13 points.  Meadville’s Kiera Holcer scored 28 of the Lady Eagles 43 points, including seven made three-point shots.

In an overtime thriller, the Savannah Lady Savages overcome Nora Ford’s 23 point outing to oust the Penney Lady Hornets in overtime, 65-64.  Graycen Prothero had 20 point and Somers Finch 10 for Hamilton.  Benght led the Savages with 20 points, with Jones adding 14 and Stites 10 points.

In a battle of Hornet boys teams, Chillicothe beat Hamilton, 58-41.  Westley Brandsgaard had 22 and C.J. Pfaff 19 points for Chillicothe, with Hamilton led by Michael Roberts and Cale Whitt with nine points each.  Braden Potts had eight for Hamilton.

The Green City boys downed North Shelby in the LaPlata quarterfinals, 66-52, advancing the Gophers to a semifinal showdown with #1 seed LaPlata, a 69-32 winner over Atlanta.  In the girls quarterfinals, Canton routed Atlanta, 78-37. Northeast (Cairo) was a 67-28 winner over LaPlata.  The Lady Bearcats have the #1 seed in the LaPlata Tournament.

The Linn County Mustangs, in Monday night doubleheader action from the Tri-County Conference, swept Novinger, with the Lady Mustangs winning in Purdin, 49-47.  The boys game went to Linn County, 59-37.
