Josh Harris is set to take over as the owner of the Washington Commanders before the start of training camp. His group agreed to purchase the franchise for a record-breaking $6.05 billion. The NFL finance committee has reviewed the deal and has scheduled a special meeting on July 20 for owners to vote on the transaction. It is highly likely that Harris will receive the necessary 24 votes for approval, and the ownership change will be finalized shortly after the vote.
By the time the Commanders begin their training camp on July 27, Dan Snyder’s 24-year tenure as owner will officially come to an end. Harris and his business partner David Blitzer, who are also part-owners of the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Devils, will then have a few months to sell their 5% stake in the Pittsburgh Steelers, as per league regulations.
Initially, no major immediate changes are expected in the front office or coaching staff of the Commanders, following the same approach Harris and Blitzer took with the 76ers and the Devils. Significant changes are unlikely until after the 2023 season. The incoming ownership group plans to conduct a thoughtful analysis before implementing strategies both on and off the field, with a focus on building a sustainable long-term winning team.
