Alex Peterson will lead the Grundy County R-5 boys into their first season of baseball, as a handful of HDC schools, due to increased teams playing softball, switched to baseball for the 2016-2017 athletic year. Â The move to baseball should be beneficial from a scheduling standpoint for the Panthers, as many neighboring districts in the Tri-County Conference, including Green City, Linn County, Meadville, and Novinger, offer boy’s baseball as well.
Fourteen young men will make up the Panther squad this year, a number just enough to be comfortable for Coach Peterson, who noted the importance of pitching staff depth in having a quality baseball program:
That change to the pitching philosophy will lead to a good amount of “mixing and matching” for the Panther coach this fall:

The Panthers will open the season against Brashear, playing the Tigers at the field in Newtown at 7 o’clock on Tuesday, August 23rd. Â The first significant test of the campaign, with multiple games planned for one day, will be at the East Harrison Tournament, on Saturday, August 27th in Ridgeway:
