The Green City Lady Gophers switched places with the girls program from Madison High School before Wednesday night’s “Top 5” showdown at LaPlata High School, with Green City, the only unbeaten remaining in the Class 1 girls poll, moving up to #3 (MBCA), while Madison fell to #5.
In the semifinal played between the schools, Green City survived a stern test against Madison, winning 40-37 to move into the LaPlata Tournament’s championship game (Saturday at 4:30 PM). The loss drops Madison to the third place game, Friday night at 8 o’clock. The victory improves the Lady Gophers to 20-0 on the season, while dropping the Lady Panthers to 17-4.
The Green City boys played #1 seed Canton in the LaPlata semifinal round on Wednesday night, falling in a hard-fought affair, 51-41. The Gopher set-back drops the Tri-County Conference squad into the third place game (Saturday – 3:00 PM), while Canton advances to the boys championship game (Saturday – 6:00 PM).
In the consolation semifinals on Wednesday night, the Northeast of Cairo boys hammered Atlanta 86-58, while the North Shelby Lady Raiders beat Atlanta 41-26.
Semifinals continue tonight (Thursday night) from LaPlata High School, with the LaPlata Lady Bulldogs playing Schuyler County in a consolation game at 4:30. In the late-night boys consolation affair, set for a 9 o’clock start, Madison battles Schuyler County. In the championship semifinals tonight, the LaPlata Bulldogs host the North Shelby boys at 6 o’clock, followed by the #1 seed Northeast of Cairo girls taking on Canton at 7:30.
