Trenton High School senior Werthen Gass shot an 18-hole score of 87 on Tuesday, finishing four strokes behind the winning tally of 83 by Kirksville’s Abby Boyer, in the annual Kirksville Invitational Golf Tournament.

Gass shot 44 on the front nine and 43 on the back, with Coach Travis Mullenix saying, “Werthen took a little ride on the bogey train yesterday, but still turned in a very good score. She finished strong with 2 pars in her last 3 holes.” Trenton’s other scores were Maci Henson at 117, Oakley Madden with 119, Mari Atup at 141, and Josie Chumbley with a 142.

Coach Mullenix added, “Oakley and Maci both had pretty good days. Each had a few big numbers that inflated their total scores, but also they had some really good holes and shots. Maci just needs keep working on her swing and fine-tune a few things. When she plays confident she plays better, so we will be working on that, too.  Oakley’s swing is getting better each week. She’s hitting the ball farther and becoming more consistent, so I think we’ll see her scores continue to improve.  It was our first tournament competing as a full team and I was happy with how we finished. It was also Mari and Josie’s first ever 18 hole tournament. I think it opened their eyes a bit and now realize how much of grind it can be out there. They both hit some really good shots and are improving, but it is just going to take some time. They’ve had some frustrating moments out there, but I’m proud of how they have been able to hold it together and keep on working to improve with a good attitude.”

Mexico High School won the team competition with a score of 381, the only sub-400 score among the teams present.  Kirksville’s 408 was second place, with Macon’s 442 third.  Trenton’s team shot a 464, good for 7th place in the tournament.
