On a sloppy and wet night at Bulldog Stadium, the visiting Trenton Bulldogs struggled with turnovers, with one fumble, late in the first quarter, resulting in a 30 yard return for the game-winning touchdown, as the host Gallatin Bulldogs beat their rivals to the east, 31-7, in action broadcast on Hot Country Z 101.7.
Gallatin’s junior running back, Haden Bradford, had a pair of two-yard touchdown runs, with the first opening the scoring with 7:34 remaining in the first quarter, and the last finishing the first half scoring, with 5:28 remaining in the second quarter.
Trenton, in the Bulldogs only points of the game, answered Bradford’s early touchdown with a scoring run of their own, as Carson Radcliff found a crease and put six points on the scoreboard. Tom Johnson had the play-by-play call:
Following a Trenton defensive stop, the Bulldogs got the football with the chance for a score to give THS the lead. However, the first turnover of the night for the Bulldogs, a fumble in the backfield, was scooped up by Gallatin’s senior defensive lineman Thomas King, who rumbled 35 yards for a 13-7 advantage just before the quarter break. The extra point made the score 14-7. Â
The second quarter proved disastrous for Trenton, while prosperous for Gallatin, as Trenton, on either mishandled snaps or mishandled handoff’s, gave Gallatin field position on the Trenton side of midfield for back-to-back drives. On the first opportunity, All-GRC kicker Adrian Hernandez drilled a 35 yard field goal for a 17-7 lead. On the second, Bradford scored for the second time in the half, leaving the score at the break at 24-7.
Gallatin’s offense played an effective game of “keep away” from a Trenton offense hungry to gain possession of the football in the third quarter, with the home team dominating time of possession and scoring the final points of the night on an 8 yard touchdown run by Graydee Rains with 6:42 left in the quarter. Hernandez hit the fourth of his four extra point attempts, and went 1 for 2 in field goal attempts for Gallatin (2-1, 1-0 GRC).
Bradford finished the night with 23 carries for 108 yards for the victorious Bulldogs. For Trenton, Radcliff had nine carries for 61 yards. With throwing the ball proving to the difficult in a game played in a consistent thick drizzle or light rain, no passes were completed from scrimmage by either team during the course of the contest.
Trenton Head Coach Brandon Boswell was direct in answering what went wrong for his football team in the road trip to Daviess County:
Gallatin will look for back-to-back GRC wins this Friday night, playing winless Maysville, with Trenton, still in search of their first win of 2018, returning to C.F. Russell Stadium to play Putnam County in the Bulldogs Homecoming contest, with a 7 o’clock kick on Hot Country Z 101.7.
