The Gallatin Bulldogs used a balanced offense and a stifling defensive effort to shut out Trenton on Friday night, 24-0 at C.F. Russell Stadium, in a varsity football contest broadcast on Hot Country Z 101.7.
After a Trenton fumble was recovered on the host teams’ first play from scrimmage, the Gallatin offense was unable to move the football, losing possession after four plays. However, after a defensive stop of Trenton, the THS punter had a six-yard effort, giving the visitors another shot at pay-dirt. Halfback Haden Bradford gave the Bulldogs a 6-0 with 6:46 remaining in the opening quarter:
Six minutes later, Gallatin pushed the lead to 10-0, with Tristen Gibson connecting on a 25 yard field goal.
The game remained scoreless through the next 2 1/2 quarters, although it did appear, with momentum from a turnover, Trenton’s opportunity to score gave hope to the fans at C.F. Russell Stadium late in the second quarter:
While Whitney’s pick gave Trenton good field position, only 35 seconds remained in the half, and with a lack of time outs with a run-heavy offense, time ran out on Trenton, despite the Bulldogs picking up 22 yards after the interception.
Using their excellent sideline-to-sideline speed, Gallatin scored two touchdowns on “shuffle passes” from Brinley Vandiver to Ross Critten in the final quarter, with the first score, coming with 4:43 remaining, effectively ending any comeback hopes from Trenton:
Gallatin, in improving to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the Grand River Conference, was moved up to a 9th place tie in Class 1 in this week’s Missouri football media poll. Trenton, looking to get its offense rolling under first-year coach Kevin Hixson, slips to 0-3 overall, and 0-1 in the GRC.
For Gallatin, sophomore quarterback Brinley Vandiver had an 11 for 17 night throwing, with 182 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. J.J. Waters had 4 catches for 132 yards, with Ross Critten 7 catches for 49 yards and two scores. Bradford, on the ground, had 22 carries for 84 yards and a touchdown.
Here is victorious Gallatin Head Coach Patrick Treece:
Trenton senior halfback Mark Trump led the Bulldog offense with 16 carries for 66 yards. Jaren Whitney had 10 carries for 33 yards. Trenton plays at Putnam County this Friday night (September 20th) at 7 o’clock on Hot Country Z 101.7.
