A full night of basketball greeted all 16 schools in the Grand River Conference on Tuesday night, with most playing their third conference games among eight doubleheaders. Among the games contested was a varsity doubleheader between Bulldog foes at Trenton High School, broadcast on Hot Country Z 101.7.
In the opener, the Gallatin Lady Bulldogs continued to show their improvement, besting a squad that had been a thorn in their side for several years running. Rallying from an early 8-1 deficit with a second quarter surge led by AnnaBelle Ball, GHS held on in the game’s final moments to beat Trenton 34-30. Ball had a game high 11 points for Gallatin, now 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the Grand River Conference.
Trenton struggled in handling Gallatin’s persistent full court pressure defense, as it was that challenge, in the opinion of Lady Bulldog head coach Kameron Cool, that decided the game:Â
Trenton falls to 3-8 overall and 0-3 in GRC competition. Â
The boys game saw continued Trenton improvement, but even that aspect of the game proved to be nowhere close to seeing the home team swing an upset, as Gallatin (9-0, 3-0) remained unbeaten with a 75-43 win over the host Bulldogs.
The first quarter started fast, with Trenton’s offense attempting to keep up with Gallatin’s break-neck pace. While Trenton scored 15 points in the quarter, Gallatin sizzled the cords at THS to the tune of 28, and with renewed defensive intensity through the rest of the game, GHS cruised to the win. Payton Feiden had a game-high 25 points for Gallatin, with Isaac Bird tallying 21. For Trenton (2-8, 0-3), the starting backcourt of Kiefer Tolson and Gabe Novak combined for 32 points (both with 16).
Trenton head coach Jon Guthrie, while praising his team’s effort level, acknowledged that, for his team, closing the divide between his program and the one 25 miles down Highway 6 will take some added time:Â
Gallatin will play a varsity doubleheader at Polo on Friday night, with Trenton hosting the Maysville Wolverines.
