Former University of Missouri and Vanderbilt University head coach Woody Widenhofer died Monday at the age of 77. Widenhofer’s song Ryan shared the news with The Tennessean after the elder Widenhofer had suffered a second stroke within the past month.
Widenhofer coached at Mizzou from 1985 to 1988, putting together a record of 12-31-1. He later coached at Vanderbilt from 1997 to 2001, with a mark of 15-40 overall and 4-36 in the Southeastern Conference.
His greatest coaching success came in the 1970s, as the defensive coordinator with the dynastic Pittsburgh Steelers, who won four Super Bowl championships in the decade under head coach Chuck Noll, quarterback Terry Bradshaw, and a dominating defense known as the “Steel Curtain”.
