Long-time Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackle Mitch Schwartz has announced his retirement, saying that nerve pain from his October 2020 back injury will put him on the sidelines permanently.
Schwartz played in 7,849 consecutive snaps between the start of his NFL career with the Cleveland Browns in 2012, and the injury suffered in Week 6 in 2020. He was one of the veteran anchors for the 2019 Chiefs team that defeated the 49ers in Super Bowl 54, breaking Kansas City’s five-decade long championship drought.
Schwartz hangs up the cleats following a career that saw a first-team All-Pro selection in 2018, and three other occasions where he earned second-team All-Pro honors.
