The Carolina Panthers have reached an agreement with Justin Houston, a former Kansas City Chiefs outside linebacker and four-time Pro Bowler, on a one-year contract.
Houston, who has 12 years of experience in the NFL, brings his expertise to the Panthers as a veteran edge rusher, filling a key role opposite Brian Burns. With 111 1/2 career sacks to his name, including 9 1/2 from last season while playing for the Baltimore Ravens, Houston is expected to bolster the Panthers’ defensive lineup.
The move aligns with the Panthers’ plan to enhance their defense for the upcoming season, particularly in their transition to a 3-4 defensive scheme. General manager Scott Fitterer emphasized the importance of adding an edge rusher to complement standout player Brian Burns and alleviate some of the pressure on him.
Houston’s standout season was in 2014 when he earned All-Pro recognition, recording an impressive 22 sacks during his time with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Selected in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft, Houston spent the first eight years of his career with the Chiefs. He later played for two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts before joining the Ravens for the past two years.
With this acquisition, the Carolina Panthers aim to improve upon their 7-10 record from the previous season and make a return to the playoffs after a five-year absence.
