Penney High School junior point guard Nora Ford had a strong floor game with 20 points, including 10 in a Hornet-controlled third quarter, in a 49-29 victory for Hamilton over Lawson in Saturday’s girls championship game in the KCI Tournament at Lathrop.
Sophomore forward Somers Finch had one of the best games of her young career with 10 points for Penney, while junior forward Graycen Prothero had eight points, all in the second half.
For Lawson, senior point guard Taylor Dolt had 12 points, but no other Lady Cardinals had more than three.
The East Buchanan Bulldogs dominated the boys championship game, riding 25 points from junior forward Ethan Kilgore to a 57-38 win over the Lathrop Mules. Behind Kilgore, the Bulldogs had balanced scoring, with Tristin Smith scoring nine, Tucker White nine, and Owen Fortney six points.
In the loss, Lathrop’s first of the season, Blake Gordon paced the Mules with 15 points while Nathan Fine added seven.
The Plattsburg Tigers beat the Lawson Cardinals in the boys third place game, 43-39.
On Friday evening, the Mid-Buchanan Lady Dragons claimed third place over North Platte 65-57, while in the consolation finals, the Plattsburg Lady Tigers beat East Buchanan 56-48, with the Penney boys falling to Mid-Buchanan 65-62.
