The two-time defending state champion Marceline Lady Tigers scored seven runs over the first two innings, and held on late, to defeat the Trenton Lady Bulldogs in Monday night softball action from Walt Disney Municipal Park 9-6. The contest ended Trenton’s six game winning streak, and was broadcast on KTTN FM 92.3.
Marceline scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning, putting six hits in a row on the board, with the major blast a two-run homer off the bat of Erin Neblock. Trenton scored a single run in the second to get on the board, only to see the Lady Tigers add two more runs in the second.
Trenton starter Emma Roberts settled in after the rocky start, holding the Marceline offense in check with back-to-back scoreless innings, while the Bulldog offense put up single runs in the 4th and 5th innings, cutting the lead to 7-3. Â
In the bottom of the 5th, two Trenton outfield errors cost the Bulldogs, as Marceline picked up two critical insurance runs, pushing the lead to 9-3.
Trenton rallied in the top of the 7th, bringing the tying run to the plate with two on and two out after scoring three runs, but a ground ball ended the Bulldog rally. THS ended the game with 13 hits, but committed five errors, with Marceline racking up 12 hits in the win.
Kaylor Hodge and Kenzie Lynch had two base hits for Trenton, with Emma Roberts and Avery Clark picking up three hits each.
Barnett pitched the first 6 2/3 innings for Marceline to pick up the win, with Ireland Bloss earning the save by picking up the final out of the contest.
