The Trenton Bulldogs formula of strong defense, consistent line play, and a controlling ground offense paid dividends on Friday night at Eddie Allen Field in Princeton, with the Bulldogs rolling to a 42-6 win over the Princeton Tigers to open Grand River Conference action, heard on KTTN FM 92.3.
As they have now done for three Friday nights in a row, Trenton grabbed a first-quarter lead, with an 8 yard scamper by Gabe Novak and the PAT by Sam Gibson giving THS the lead at the 5:42 mark of the opening quarter. Trenton was in the red zone as the quarter ended, with senior quarterback Coleman Griffin scoring on a five-yard keeper on the first play of the second quarter, pushing the advantage, after a blocked PAT, to 13-0.
Princeton cut into the advantage with a 70 yard fly pattern from Justin Rhoades to Talan Holt with 9:47 to go in the first half. The two-point conversion failed, leaving the Bulldogs lead at 13-6.
Trenton dominated the rest of the way, with a two-yard plunge by Gibson pushing the lead to 20-6 after the made extra point. Facing second-and long from their own 26 yard line late in the first half, the Bulldogs went to the air, with Griffin connecting with Novak in front of the Tiger sideline. Tom Johnson had the call on KTTN:Â
The Bulldogs completed the scoring with a pair of third quarter scores, as Gibson crossed the goal line from six yards out, with Coleman hitting sophomore Mason Rongey on a 30-yard slant pattern with 7:49 to go in the third quarter.
Trenton, now 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in the GRC, will play at fellow unbeaten Putnam County on Friday night at 7 o’clock on KTTN FM 92.3. Princeton will play Milan in Week 4 of the season.
