The St. Louis Cardinals emerged victorious in a closely contested game against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday, prevailing with a 4-3 win in the 10th inning. Paul DeJong played a pivotal role, hitting an RBI double to secure the Cardinals’ victory.

DeJong’s double down the left field line came off Keynan Middleton, driving in Nolan Gorman, who had started the inning on second base. It was a significant hit for DeJong, who had been in a 1-for-19 slump before his recent success.

The Cardinals managed to overcome three errors that resulted in all three of the White Sox’s runs being unearned. Despite their defensive struggles, the Cardinals maintained their composure and came away with the win.

St. Louis catcher Willson Contreras made a substantial impact, both offensively and defensively. Contreras hit a two-run homer and reached base four times during the game, displaying his recent strong form at the plate. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol commended Contreras for his improved performance and his ability to drive the ball to all fields.

Contreras returned behind the plate after missing two games due to a dental procedure. While he contributed offensively, he also faced challenges defensively, with two passed balls and a throwing error.

JoJo Romero, the fourth Cardinals reliever, pitched two innings and earned his first career win. Romero previously thought he had earned a victory in May but didn’t receive the official credit. This win held a special significance for him, and he expressed his hope that it would remain in the record books.

The Cardinals tied the game at 3 in the ninth inning after loading the bases against Kendall Graveman. A chopper hit by Alec Burleson resulted in only one out instead of a potential game-ending double play, allowing Lars Nootbar to score from third.

Both starting pitchers delivered strong performances. Steven Matz, making his first start since May 24, allowed just one unearned run and struck out nine in 5 1/3 innings for the Cardinals. Lucas Giolito, pitching for the White Sox, gave up only two hits and two runs in seven innings.

Matz’s outing was particularly impressive, and he may have earned himself a spot back in the Cardinals’ rotation. After a difficult start to the season, he showed great determination and pitched with conviction.

Despite the loss, Giolito received praise from Chicago manager Pedro Grifol for his exceptional performance. However, the White Sox struggled offensively, failing to generate enough momentum to secure the win.

Looking ahead, the Cardinals will host the Washington Nationals, while the White Sox will begin a road series against the Atlanta Braves as part of a nine-game trip.
