The Marceline Tigers clipped the defending Class 1 state champion Gallatin Bulldogs by 7 strokes to win the Class 1, Section 4 golf tournament held Monday at the Green Hills Course in Chillicothe. Â By Marceline’s first place finish (325) and Gallatin’s runner-up finish (332), both teams will be eligible for the Class 1 state championship on Monday and Tuesday of next week at the state tournament in Bolivar. Other schools in the state meet will be Bloomfield, Westran, Lincoln, Salisbury, Windsor, Greenwood, and Stover.
Mid-Buchanan, in the Section 4 tournament, finished third (356), followed by Stanberry (356), Scotland County (366), LaPlata (393), Milan (420), and Schuyler County (455).
Gallatin’s Jett Simmons continue to golf as a potential threat to win the state championship, following up a 5-under par score in winning districts, with a three-under par score of 69 in Chillicothe. Â Jeffrey Hamilton of Marceline was second (73), with other scores of note including Worth County’s Seth Brown and Marceline’s Makenzie Fessler, tied for sixth place at 79, Stanberry’s Cole Craig in 8th place at 81, Marceline’s Jordan Elam at 83, Gallatin’s Logan Burns at 84, Stanberry’s Mitchell Carroll at 84, King City’s Davis Washburn at 87, and Gallatin’s Gabe Cole at 88.
Despite finishing under the cut line at 88, advancing with their teams to state will be Marceline’s Andrew Edgar (90), Galatin’s Haden Bradford (91), Marceline’s Colby Sims (92), and Gallatin’s Wyatt Bird (94).
