The Milan Lady Wildcats, after losing an early game 6-1 lead, rallied with single runs in the 6th and 7th innings to defeat visiting Trenton on Tuesday night, with an 8-7 final in softball action broadcast on Hot Country Z 101.7.
Milan, on the strength of two Avery Pickering homers in the first two innings, claimed a 6-1 lead against Trenton starter Emma Roberts. With Milan already up 1-0 in the bottom of the 1st, Pickering rocked a shot over the left field wall to double the lead.
In the bottom of the 2nd inning, after Marian Dabney had scored to push the lead to 3-0, Pickering hit a sinking liner to left to rolled to the corner, with a three-run inside-the-park shot pushing the lead to 6-1.
Milan’s defense slumped in the middle innings, as Trenton scored three runs in the 4th inning to slice the lead to 6-4. The Lady ‘Cats committed three errors in the frame, with two Trenton runs in the 5th inning, with RBI singles by Mirena King and Madi Moore, tying the contest.
Trenton took a brief 7-6 lead in the visiting 6th, with Ella Novak scoring after reaching second base on a pair of Milan errors, followed by base hits by Emma Roberts and Kaylor Hodge.
Annamarie Smith led off the Mlian 6th with a leadoff single, with a stolen base, wide pitch, and run-scoring double by Emerson Pauley tying the game.
Trenton’s opportunity to take the lead in the 7th disappeared as Jena Harris was thrown out at home attempting to score on a potential Milan error.
In the bottom of the 7th, Avery Sayre hammered a one-out double, with Marian Dabney driving a double to left to end the game.
Milan improves to 7-6 overall and 1-4 in the GRC, dropping Trenton to 6-6 overall and 2-4 in the GRC.
Milan had eight errors in the game to Trenton’s six. Avery Clark pitched well in relief for the Bulldogs, as despite the loss, she went 4 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and two runs with three walks and five strikeouts. Pauley was the winning pitcher for Milan, with seven runs allowed, but only three earned, with five strikeouts.
